Purdue's $50M Manufacturing Boost Powers Indiana Innovation

May 4, 2026

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University launched a $50 million advanced manufacturing project in June 2015 with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by more than 200 people at the Purdue Research Park. The 62,000-square-foot Indiana Manufacturing Institute, dedicated in July 2016 with over 300 attendees and 20 Indiana composite materials companies, advances research into lightweight composites like carbon fiber for automotive, aviation, wind energy and aerospace industries. About 30,000 square feet supports Purdue's Center for Composites Manufacturing and Simulation, where engineers and Polytechnic Institute students develop stronger, energy-saving technologies.

The facility anchors a $259 million U.S. Department of Energy initiative under President Obama's National Network for Manufacturing Innovation, with $70 million federal funding matched by $189 million from industry, states and universities. Led by the University of Tennessee, the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) unites partners from Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Colorado. Indiana Economic Development Corporation backs nearly $35 million in research equipment over five years via a DOE cooperative agreement, enhancing West Lafayette's role in Boilermaker innovation.

Now operational for a decade as of 2026, the institute bolsters Indiana's manufacturing economy, drawing private collaborators to the remaining 32,000 square feet for joint ventures. Purdue's push aligns with state priorities, positioning Greater Lafayette as a hub for high-tech jobs amid national efforts to lightweight vehicles and turbines for efficiency.
