Dumas Enters Stage 1 Drought Plan, Asks Residents to Cut Water Use 10%

Staff Writer
May 13, 2026

Dumas residents are asked to voluntarily reduce water usage as the City of Dumas implements Stage 1 of its annual Drought Contingency Plan. This stage, which automatically runs from May through September, aims to conserve the available water supply and protect city water facilities during scorching Panhandle temperatures.

The primary goal of Stage 1 is to achieve a voluntary 10% reduction in daily water demand across the city. To help meet this target, the city requests that customers limit the watering of garden areas and lawns to specific hours: between 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., and again from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

All city operations must also comply with these Stage 1 water use restrictions. While City Park irrigation times may be adjusted to accommodate park users and scheduled events in the heart of this Moore County community, the total allowed watering time will not be extended. The city emphasizes the importance of practicing water conservation and minimizing or disrupting the use of water for non-essential purposes.

Stage 1 of the Drought Contingency Plan will remain in effect until the last day of September each year. City officials acknowledge that these measures may cause inconvenience but stress the imperative for community-wide cooperation to manage the shared water resources effectively. The City of Dumas appreciates residents' willingness to participate in these conservation efforts.
