Grady County, including Cairo, is under a Tropical Storm Watch with potential for damaging winds, moderate flooding, and tornadoes; residents should complete preparations now.

CAIRO, GA – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Grady County, including Cairo, effective immediately until 7:15 PM UTC today, October 8, 2026. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL, warns that tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours.

Residents should act now to complete preparations. Winds are forecast to reach 10-15 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Prepare for limited wind damage, including broken tree limbs, overturned fences, and scattered power outages. Secure all loose outdoor objects.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Expect 1-3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, potentially leading to moderate flooding. Emergency plans should include the possibility of evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and roads may become impassable.

The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for several tornadoes. Be ready to shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Monitor official alerts from NWS Tallahassee and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (ready.ga.gov).
