The United States is increasing its military actions focused on Iran, bringing renewed attention to three islands positioned at the entry to the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. These islands have historically played a role in controlling ship traffic through the vital waterway.

The three islands in question are Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs. Iran has maintained control over these islands since 1971. The United Arab Emirates also claims sovereignty over all three islands.

These islands sit geographically at a point where they can influence maritime operations entering or exiting the Persian Gulf.
