Golden Police Chief Joe Harvey Retires After 39 Years
Golden Police Chief Joe Harvey retired in February after 11 years leading the department and nearly four decades in law enforcement. Harvey notified the city of his retirement on Feb. 16.
Harvey previously served in Douglas County and Greenwood Village before joining Golden. He cited the accumulated toll of traumatic events throughout his career, including the line-of-duty death of Officer Evan Dunn in 2022.
"A career in law enforcement brings a person to face hundreds of traumatic and critical events," Harvey said in a statement. "While my career has brought me success and great joy, it has also come at great sacrifice personally and professionally. After careful consideration and the love and support of my family, I have chosen to retire."
During his tenure in Golden, Harvey prioritized officer wellness and implemented Equity Based Policing practices. He said he most hopes to be remembered for mentoring officers and supporting their development.
Deputy Chief Mike Hendershot serves as interim chief during the transition. Harvey will participate in the selection process for the next police chief. He plans to focus on his family.
