Emerald Ash Borer Found in Golden, Colorado

Staff Writer
June 12, 2026

Colorado State University Extension experts confirmed the emerald ash borer in Golden earlier this month, near the intersection of Hogback Drive and Highway 93. The invasive beetle has killed tens of millions of ash trees across North America since arriving in Michigan in 2002.

City forestry officials expect the pest has spread beyond the initial discovery site. Golden has approximately 430 ash trees on public property, with many more on private land. Ash trees comprise about 15 percent of the city's tree canopy. The beetle kills most infested trees within two to four years.

Residents who own ash trees should watch for canopy thinning, D-shaped exit holes in bark, vertical bark splitting, or S-shaped tunnels beneath the bark. Those who suspect infestation can contact the city forestry team at [email protected] or 303-384-8141 for an assessment.

Property owners have three options: treat their trees with insecticide, remove them, or replace them with other species. CSU Extension horticulture experts and certified arborists can advise on treatment. The Colorado Department of Agriculture maintains a list of registered contractors and nurseries.

Residents must not transport ash firewood or untreated ash wood products outside the area. Proper disposal methods include chipping, composting, milling into lumber, or taking wood to a landfill.

The city will present cost-sharing models and community program recommendations to City Council in coming months. For more information, contact Meredith Ritchie, communications director, at [email protected] or 609-276-2523.
