Washington County: Make Address Numbers Visible for Emergency Response

Staff Writer

Washington County urges residents to make address numbers visible to emergency responders

Washington County officials are asking residents to ensure address numbers are clearly visible from the road, a step that can reduce response times during medical emergencies, fires, and accidents.

Emergency responders struggle to locate homes across the county's 600 square miles of rural territory. Many rural mailboxes lack address numbers entirely, display faded markings, or show numbers on only one side. Mail carriers know their routes well enough to deliver packages, but firefighters, EMS personnel, and law enforcement officers racing to unfamiliar locations at night face dangerous delays.

The county recommends residents post address numbers on their home, mailbox, driveway entrance, or a sign at the end of the driveway. Numbers should measure at least 3 inches tall, use contrasting colors visible day and night, and remain free from obstructions like trees or bushes. Reflective numbers or signs at driveway entrances help responders spot the correct turn in rural areas.

Residents should inspect their address markings and replace faded or damaged numbers as needed. The county's message: "We can't help you if we can't find you."
