The Tiny “When–Then” Plan That Makes Follow-Through Easier

Motivation is unreliable, especially before coffee. A simple when–then plan lets you decide in advance what you’ll do when the usual distraction shows up.

Today's Affirmation
I can make the next right action easier by deciding it ahead of time.

The Intention
Many of us wait to feel ready before starting something important. Unfortunately, “ready” is a slippery little creature that often disappears the moment an email arrives or the laundry starts looking judgmental. A when–then plan works differently: you choose a specific cue and attach one specific action to it.

For example: “When I finish my first cup of coffee, then I’ll spend five minutes outlining the report.” Or: “When I notice myself reaching for my phone during a difficult task, then I’ll put it face down and work for two more minutes.” The power is in the clarity. You are not promising to become a new person; you are giving your current self a prewritten instruction.

Use one today for the thing you keep circling but not beginning. Make the cue something you will actually notice, and make the action almost laughably small. “Work on my taxes” is vague and grim. “When I sit at my desk after lunch, then I’ll open the tax folder and find last year’s return” is doable. Starting is often the hardest part, and a small start gives your brain something concrete to continue.

Morning Practice
Write one sentence: “When ______ happens, then I will ______ for five minutes.” Fill in a cue that is already likely to occur today and an action you can complete without special equipment, perfect focus, or a heroic personality transplant.

Evening Reflection
What cue appeared today, and how did my pre-decided response change what happened next?
