Rip Current Statement Issued for Coastal Horry and Georgetown Counties
A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Coastal Horry and Georgetown Counties from Sunday morning through Sunday evening, with dangerous rip currents expected; a Coastal Flood Advisory is also active until 11 PM tonight.
Residents and visitors in Coastal Horry and Coastal Georgetown Counties are advised of a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service Wilmington NC. This statement is effective from Sunday, October 11, at 6 AM EDT through Sunday evening, October 11.
Dangerous rip currents are expected, with strong south to north longshore currents. Rip currents can quickly sweep swimmers away from shore into deeper water. For your safety, always swim near a lifeguard. If you are caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If you cannot escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 11 PM EDT this evening, October 10. Up to one foot of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This may impact vulnerable causeways to beaches and low-lying roads. If travel is necessary, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive through flooded areas or around barricades. Take precautions to protect any flood-prone property.
For the latest information regarding coastal flood impacts and closures, please consult local officials. This alert is issued by NWS Wilmington NC.
