A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service Wilmington NC for coastal areas of Pender, New Hanover, Horry, and Georgetown counties. The alert is effective from 6 AM EDT Wednesday, September 16, through Wednesday evening, September 16.

Swimmers and surfers should exercise caution when in or near the water. Strong north to south longshore currents are expected, which can sweep individuals into rip currents, piers, jetties, and other hazardous areas. These currents can also make it difficult to return to shore.

A moderate risk of rip currents is also expected. Residents and visitors are advised to check with lifeguards before entering the ocean for information on potential hazards.
