Beach Hazards Alert for Coastal Pender, New Hanover, and Georgetown Counties
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Coastal Pender, New Hanover, and Georgetown counties until 8:00 PM EDT tonight, warning of strong longshore currents and a moderate rip current risk.
Coastal residents and visitors in Pender, New Hanover (North Carolina), and Georgetown (South Carolina) counties are advised to exercise caution near and in the water due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC.
The statement is effective immediately, October 6, 2026, at 6:19 PM EDT, and will remain in effect until 8:00 PM EDT tonight. The NWS reports strong north to south longshore currents and a moderate risk of rip currents.
These conditions can sweep swimmers and surfers into dangerous areas such as rip currents, piers, and jetties. Longshore currents may also make it difficult for individuals to return to shore.
The NWS advises that caution should be used when in or near the water. Before entering the ocean, check with lifeguards for information on possible hazards.
