North Hempstead Master Plan Update | First Since 1989

North Hempstead will hire a planning consultant to update its Comprehensive Master Plan, the first revision since 1989. Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena announced the Department of Planning and Environmental Protection issued a Request for Proposals on Wednesday.

The consultant will guide community input from residents, businesses, and civic groups to shape the town's priorities for growth, development, and preservation over the next decade. Commissioner Nancy Shahverdi, who leads the Planning Department, will oversee the process with an advisory committee.

Councilman Dennis Walsh said the update was overdue. "Our economy, environmental challenges, and infrastructure needs have changed significantly," he said. The current plan no longer reflects North Hempstead's demographics, housing needs, economic landscape, or environmental concerns.

The Planning Department has already compiled background materials and reviewed existing policies. The new plan will address aging in place, commercial corridor revitalization, walkability, transit connectivity, climate resilience, parks access, and preservation of historic downtowns including Mineola.

The town will hold public meetings, open houses, and online surveys as part of the planning process. The completed plan will include zoning recommendations and implementation steps to guide future decisions and investment.
