Gainesville residents can take pride in the University of Florida's significant historical footprint, with 30 buildings and the Plaza of the Americas officially recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of these structures are part of the National Register Campus Historic District, originally established in 1989. An additional ten buildings and the iconic Plaza of the Americas were added to this designation in 2008.
The university's journey began in 1906 with just two unfinished buildings and 102 students. Today, UF has transformed into a sprawling institution, serving approximately 70,000 students and employees across more than 900 buildings on nearly 2,000 acres.
To help the community explore this rich history, UF offers an interactive map that highlights key buildings, landmarks, and the preservation efforts dedicated to maintaining these historic sites. Resources detailing UF’s commitment to preserving its architectural heritage are also available.
