Thomas John “Turtle” Speth, 71 of Lee, passed away May 25, 2026 at Berkshire Medical Center. He was born in Pittsfield on April 21, 1955 to the late Joseph J. Speth and Lea Mae Speth. He also leaves several nieces and nephews whom he adored and a large family of aunts, uncles and cousins.A 1973 graduate of Mt. Greylock High School, Tom was a longtime laborer for Ernie DeChane Excavation and Construction.Tom, affectionately known as "Turtle," was rarely seen without his signature polka dot welder's hat, a trademark that became as recognizable as his smile. He grew up in Lanesborough, surrounded by a large extended family of cousins, and shared a particularly close bond with his brothers, Bill and Dan. Together, they created countless memories and remained close throughout their lives. As a teenager, Turtle could often be found playing pinball at the old Shady Rest Restaurant or spending time at the Lanesborough Fire Department, where he proudly served alongside his father and brothers. During his high school years, he was known for his independent spirit and mischievous sense of humor, often finding his own ways to pass the time rather than sitting in class (smoking in the boys room). He enjoyed spending Saturday nights at Lebanon Valley Speedway and was an avid NASCAR fan. He also faithfully cheered on the Boston Red Sox and you could count on him watching any games played by his favorites; Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots or Boston Bruins. He was truly one of a kind—a simple man with a kind heart, humble, a generous spirit, and a genuine love for family and friends. His infectious laugh and warm smile could light up any room, and his presence made those around him feel welcome.Above all else, he was a devoted husband, supportive and loving father but nothing meant more to him than his grandchildren. The bond he shares with them was, is and always will be unbreakable. His grandchildren describe him as generous, caring, selfless and invaluable. If asked, they will tell you that his Sunday breakfast and afternoon burgers were a “big deal”.He is survived by his wife, Theresa Speth; daughter, Marcy Taliceo; sons, Gene Walbert and Charles Walbert and grandchildren, Marquis Taliceo, Syerra Taliceo and Khassidy Nelson; great-granddaughter, Raven Taliceo; brothers, William Speth (Laura), Daniel Speth (Kathleen), sisters: Sandra Wheeler (longtime companion Dan Stephenson) and Sheila Finch (Ken). We were truly blessed to have such an amazing man in our lives. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.Calling hours will be held, Tuesday, June 23, 2026 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. with a reflection time from 6:30 to 7 p.m. at Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the Lanesborough Volunteer Fire Department.
