Dense Fog Alert: Drive with Caution This Morning
A Special Weather Statement has been issued for dense fog across the Baltimore, Washington D.C., and surrounding regions until 7:00 AM EDT today, advising drivers to use extreme caution due to reduced visibility.
Drivers in the Baltimore, Washington D.C., and surrounding areas are advised to use extreme caution this morning due to localized dense fog. The National Weather Service (NWS) Baltimore MD/Washington DC has issued a Special Weather Statement, effective immediately until 7:00 AM EDT today, October 5, 2026.
The NWS reports that patchy, dense fog has developed, leading to visibilities dropping below one-quarter of a mile in affected areas. Motorists should anticipate sudden reductions in visibility while traveling.
Affected areas include the Patapsco River including Baltimore Harbor, District of Columbia, Washington, Frederick, Carroll, Northern Baltimore, Cecil, Southern Baltimore, Prince Georges, Anne Arundel, Charles, St. Marys, Calvert, Central and Eastern Allegany, Northwest Montgomery, Central and Southeast Montgomery, Northwest Howard, Central and Southeast Howard, Northwest Harford, Southeast Harford counties in Maryland. In Virginia, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren, Clarke, Albemarle, Greene, Madison, Rappahannock, Orange, Culpeper, Fairfax, Arlington/Falls Church/Alexandria, Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Northern Fauquier, Southern Fauquier, Western Loudoun, Eastern Loudoun, Northern Virginia Blue Ridge, Central Virginia Blue Ridge, Northwest Prince William, and Central and Southeast Prince William/Manassas/Manassas Park counties are impacted. West Virginia counties of Hampshire, Morgan, Berkeley, Jefferson, Hardy, and Eastern Mineral are also included.
To ensure safety, the NWS advises motorists to reduce speed, leave extra travel time, increase following distance, and use low beam headlights.
