High Wind Warning Issued: Damaging Winds Expected, Power Outages Possible
A High Wind Warning is in effect until Sunday, October 11, at 8:00 AM EDT for Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Graham, Northern Jackson, Macon, Southern Jackson, and Transylvania counties, with damaging winds and power outages expected.
A High Wind Warning has been issued for elevations above 3500 feet across Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Graham, Northern Jackson, Macon, Southern Jackson, and Transylvania counties. This warning is effective immediately, October 10, 2026, at 12:19 PM EDT, and remains in effect until Sunday, October 11, 2026, at 8:00 AM EDT. The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg SC advises residents to prepare for damaging winds and potential power outages.
For areas above 3500 feet, southeast winds are expected to be between 10 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph. Below 3500 feet, a Wind Advisory is in effect, with southeast winds of 5 to 20 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. The affected areas span from Graham and Macon counties northeast to Mitchell County.
The National Weather Service warns that these strong winds will likely blow down trees and power lines, particularly in higher elevations, leading to widespread power outages. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Unsecured objects may be blown around, and isolated power outages could occur in lower elevations due to falling tree limbs.
Residents are advised to remain in the lower levels of their homes during the windstorm and to avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Exercise caution if driving. Stay tuned to local radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for further information and updates.
