High Wind Warning Issued for WNC Mountains; Power Outages Expected

A High Wind Warning has been issued by the NWS for Western North Carolina mountains from tonight until Sunday morning, with damaging winds and widespread power outages expected.

Residents in Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Graham, Northern Jackson, Macon, Southern Jackson, and Transylvania counties should prepare for a High Wind Warning effective tonight, October 9, at midnight until Sunday, October 11, at 8:00 AM EDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Greenville-Spartanburg, SC, has issued this warning.

For elevations above 3,500 feet, east winds are expected to be 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. In lower elevations below 3,500 feet, a Wind Advisory is in effect with east winds of 10 to 20 mph and gusts of 45 to 50 mph.

The NWS warns of damaging winds that will blow down trees and power lines, particularly in higher elevations, leading to widespread power outages. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Unsecured objects may be blown around, and isolated power outages are possible in lower elevations due to falling tree limbs.

During the windstorm, residents are advised to remain in the lower levels of their homes and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Exercise caution if driving. Stay informed by listening to local radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for further updates.
