Dangerous Rip Currents and High Surf Expected for Gulf, Franklin Co. Beaches
A High Rip Current Risk and High Surf Advisory have been issued for Gulf and Franklin County beaches, with dangerous rip currents expected through late Sunday night and large waves of 5 to 8 feet from Friday morning to Sunday morning.
Coastal residents and visitors in Gulf and Franklin Counties are advised to stay out of the water due to a High Rip Current Risk and High Surf Advisory now in effect. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee issued the alert today, October 9, at 5:03 AM EDT.
Dangerous rip currents are expected through late Sunday night, October 11. Additionally, a High Surf Advisory is active from Friday, October 9, at 11 AM EDT (10 AM CDT) until Sunday, October 11, at 11 AM EDT (10 AM CDT), with large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet anticipated in the surf zone.
These conditions will create dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and may lead to localized beach erosion. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water. If you must enter the water, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float; do not swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If you cannot escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
