Extreme Storm Surge Warning for Coastal Franklin – Act Immediately

Coastal Franklin, including Apalachicola, Eastpoint, Carrabelle, and Alligator Point, is under an Extreme Storm Surge Warning with immediate action required due to potential 4-6 feet of surge, hazardous winds, major flooding, and tornado threats.

Coastal Franklin residents, including Apalachicola, Eastpoint, Carrabelle, and Alligator Point, are under an Extreme Storm Surge Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee, FL, effective immediately, October 9 at 8:28 AM EDT. This warning remains in effect until 4:30 PM EDT today.

Life-threatening storm surge of 4-6 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete. Evacuees must be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Remain sheltered in a safe location and do not venture outside. Potential impacts from the main surge event are currently unfolding.

In addition to storm surge, expect hazardous winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway, preparing for limited wind damage. Act now to complete any preparations before winds become hazardous.

A Flood Watch is in effect, with an additional 4-8 inches of rain expected, leading to potential major flooding. Many evacuations and rescues are likely. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act will likely result in serious injury or loss of life.

The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Listen for tornado watches and warnings. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter immediately.
