Camp Abnaki Camper Earns Honor for Mentoring Leadership
Max spent his second summer at Camp Abnaki on Lake Champlain doing more than trying new activities. The returning camper mentored a first-time visitor, introduced him to the waterfront and activity fields, and connected him with other returning campers.
Max's leadership extended through the cabin. He encouraged cabinmates to attempt the high ropes course, paddling, and archery. When conflicts arose, he mediated disagreements and helped peers move forward together.
He supported his counselor, Ernesto, by gathering the group, reinforcing expectations, and encouraging participation. By session's end, Max's cabin showed stronger teamwork and shared responsibility.
Camp Abnaki named Max an Honor Camper during the end-of-session ceremony, recognizing his character and commitment to building community at the 89-acre camp in Fairfax.
The Greater Burlington YMCA operates four summer camp options, including Camp Abnaki.
