The Town of Irmo and the Town Council are proud to recognize a resident who truly embodies the essence of "service above self": Matthew Jenkins. From the front lines of global conflict to the streets of our own community, Matthew’s life has been defined by a steadfast commitment to protecting others. A Legacy of Military Excellence Matthew’s journey began right here in our community before he was appointed to the United States Naval Academy, where he graduated with the Class of 2005. Upon commissioning, he began a distinguished career in the United States Marine Corps. His military service was marked by courage and leadership across the globe: Combat Leadership: As a platoon commander in the Antiterrorism Battalion at Camp Lejeune, he led his company through seven months of combat, earning the Combat Action Ribbon. Global Impact: He trained local combat units in Iraq and served with the Fleet Antiterrorism Security Teams in Norfolk and Guantanamo Bay. Final Command: His active-duty career concluded in 2012 following a final command with the 4th Force Recon, supporting operations across the African continent. On the Front Lines of Justice Retirement from the Marines was simply the beginning of a new chapter of service for Matthew. He joined the FBI, where he has spent years dedicated to national security and public safety. His impressive career with the Bureau includes: Working violent crime and gang squads in Phoenix. Supervising the high-profile investigation of the Nashville Christmas Day bombing. Leading efforts against violent crime, gangs, and human trafficking as a Supervisory Special Agent in the Columbia FBI office. Back Home in Irmo Since returning "home" to Irmo in 2022, Matthew has remained "Irmo tried and true". He works tirelessly alongside local law enforcement to remove dangerous criminals from our streets. Beyond his professional duties, he is deeply involved in local ministries that support our teenagers and victims of domestic violence. Recently, Matthew was awarded the FBI Medal of Excellence for his initiatives that foster collaboration between law enforcement agencies to protect our community. "Matthew Jenkins, we thank you for your leadership, your sacrifice, and your unwavering heart for the Town of Irmo. It is an honor to call you one of our own." - Mayor Bill Danielson
