Sanibel residents can celebrate Florida Native Plant Month throughout October by appreciating and planting the state’s native flora. The Sanibel Vegetation Committee leads the local observance, highlighting the ecological importance and aesthetic benefits of native plants on the island, from Bowman's Beach to the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge.
October provides ideal conditions for planting native trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and wildflowers. Many wildflowers peak in bloom this month, and fall planting helps roots establish before the spring growing season. Native plants are crucial to Sanibel’s barrier-island ecosystem. They adapt to local wet and dry seasons and require minimal fertilizer or pesticides once established. These plants provide essential habitat, food, protection, and nesting materials for local wildlife, while also enhancing yard aesthetics with unique foliage, textures, and flowers that reflect the island's natural beauty.
The Vegetation Committee will host a booth at the Farmer’s Market on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026. Attendees can view examples of native plants, receive free literature, and ask committee members questions. This event offers residents a direct opportunity to learn how to incorporate native species into their landscapes.
