A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Phenix City, Russell County, from the NWS Birmingham, AL, meaning tropical storm-force winds, moderate flooding, and potential tornadoes are possible within 48 hours; residents should prepare now.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Phenix City in Russell County, effective immediately as of 10:05 AM CDT today, October 8, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Birmingham, AL. This watch indicates that tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours.

Residents should plan for hazardous winds of 39 to 57 mph, with potential gusts up to 40 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Secure loose outdoor objects, prepare for possible damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect downed tree limbs, potential road debris, and scattered power outages. Complete all preparations before winds become hazardous.

Moderate flooding from heavy rain is also possible, with forecasts of 1-3 inches and locally higher amounts. Emergency plans should include potential evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers may swell, and localized rapid inundation can occur in low-lying areas, making driving hazardous.

The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for several tornadoes, some potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly. Tornadoes can cause significant damage, power loss, and communications failures.

This alert expires at 6:15 PM UTC today. For more information and hurricane preparedness tips, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
