RUSSELL COUNTY, AL – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Russell County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 4:20 PM CDT. The warning includes Phenix City and remains in effect until October 10 at 12:30 AM UTC.
Residents should prepare for potential moderate flooding, with an additional 1-3 inches of rain expected, and be ready to shelter quickly due to a favorable situation for several tornadoes. Emergency plans should include the potential for evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings, as failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.
While sustained winds are expected to remain below tropical storm force (15-25 mph with gusts to 45 mph), conditions will be gusty. Community officials are currently assessing any realized wind impacts.
Significant impacts are possible from flooding, including swollen rivers, overspilling banks, and hazardous driving conditions. Tornadoes could cause considerable damage, power loss, and communications failures. Keep informed for additional weather alerts. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
