A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Russell County, including Phenix City, by the National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, effective immediately until 9:00 PM CDT today, October 8. Residents should finalize preparations for hazardous wind, potential moderate flooding, and several possible tornadoes.
Wind speeds are forecast between 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Property protection efforts, including securing lightweight objects and unanchored structures, should be underway. Limited damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and some trees is possible. Prepare for scattered power outages and hazardous driving conditions, especially on elevated roadways.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Peak rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are expected, with localized higher amounts. Moderate flooding is possible, which may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers, creeks, and ditches may overflow, and some structures could be impacted.
The situation is favorable for several tornadoes, with a few potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelters. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. Tornadoes can cause significant damage, power loss, and communication failures.
