A Special Weather Statement has been issued for Rabun and Habersham counties in Georgia, and Avery, Yancey, Mitchell, Buncombe, Macon, Southern Jackson, Transylvania, Henderson, Caldwell Mountains, Burke Mountains, McDowell Mountains, Rutherford Mountains, Polk Mountains in North Carolina, and Oconee Mountains and Pickens Mountains and Greenville Mountains in South Carolina, effective until 11:00 AM UTC today, October 12, 2026.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Greenville-Spartanburg SC reports strong wind gusts are occurring this morning on the downwind side of the Blue Ridge. These winds extend from near Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina, southwest along the Escarpment to near Bearwallow Mountain in North Carolina, and into far northeast Georgia, including Clayton. Gusts of 35 to 50 mph may briefly occur downwind of ridges through late morning.

These winds have already resulted in downed trees and power lines in some areas. Residents are advised to take extra caution if outdoors this morning, particularly if driving under tall trees or operating high-profile vehicles such as trucks. The statement is issued by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC.
