Trump Administration Considered, Then Dropped, Strait of Hormuz Toll Plan

WASHINGTON – Former President Donald Trump proposed instituting a toll on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports. The suggestion prompted a concentrated, 24-hour effort by administration officials to dissuade him from the plan.

The proposal emerged from discussions regarding enhanced security for commercial shipping in the strait. During this period, Iran had reportedly interfered with vessels in the waterway.

White House and National Security Council personnel, alongside Pentagon officials, reportedly engaged in discussions to counter the toll idea. Their arguments focused on the potential negative economic and geopolitical consequences that such a move could trigger.

Officials expressed concerns that implementing a toll could disrupt global oil markets and intensify tensions with international allies, who rely on the strait for maritime trade. Countries like China and India, major consumers of oil transiting the strait, would have likely opposed the measure.

Within a day, the administration ceased consideration of the toll plan. The decision meant the United States would not impose direct fees on ships for transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the open sea. Approximately one-fifth of the world's crude oil passes through this strait daily.
