Sumter County Boosts 911 Reliability with Motorola Solutions' Next Generation System

Sumter County successfully migrated its 911 network to Motorola Solutions' Next Generation Core Services platform on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, shortly after 10 a.m. Residents experienced no interruption to 911 service during the transition.

This upgrade marks a significant step in Sumter County's ongoing investment in a modern and resilient public safety communications network. The county's 911 call volume has increased by an average of more than 10 percent annually, making system reliability crucial for emergency services.

The new platform enhances resilience through redundant routing, carrier diversity, and additional backup connectivity. This means if a connection, facility, or component encounters a problem, the network has alternative options to ensure 911 calls still reach the appropriate public safety answering point.

Stephen Kennedy, assistant county administrator, emphasized the system's focus on reliability. "This is one of those improvements residents may never notice during a normal 911 call, and that is exactly what we want," Kennedy said. "The work is happening behind the scenes to make sure our 911 system is reliable, resilient, and prepared to support the needs of our growing community."

Next Generation 911, or NG911, represents an evolution from traditional voice-based systems to secure, Internet Protocol-based networks. These advanced networks support more precise location information, text, and other forms of emergency data, improving overall emergency response capabilities for residents.
