Gunfire erupted Saturday night at a family memorial in Sanford, injuring eight people and leaving two in critical condition. Shirley Wynn, who hosted the gathering outside her childhood home, described the initial sounds as 'firecrackers' before realizing the danger.
The family had gathered to remember Zi’Erric Wynn, Shirley Wynn's grandson, who died in a car accident in 2020. Saturday marked the sixth anniversary of his death. The memorial, intended as a celebration of life, instead became a scene of chaos and violence.
One woman sustained gunshot wounds to her face and arm and requires surgery following the incident. Shirley Wynn recounted the terrifying moments, stating she 'literally ran for her life' as shots rang out. She expressed disbelief, noting, "We don’t do violence. Our family’s not a violent family. My grandson was not a violent person. So we’re all wondering today, why did they bring it to that celebration of his life?"
Sanford Police have not yet made any arrests in connection with the shooting. However, authorities stated the public is not in danger. The investigation into the violent disruption of the family memorial continues.
