Florida Voters to Decide on Property Tax Amendment Affecting Local Services Funding in November
Florida voters will decide on a constitutional amendment related to property taxes this November. This amendment, placed on the ballot by the Florida Legislature, could significantly alter how local services are funded.
Property taxes are a cornerstone of city operations, accounting for approximately 46% of the City's General Fund revenues. Nearly two-thirds of this General Fund budget directly supports public safety services, including police and fire rescue. Residents rely on these funds for services such as Beach Safety, Parks, and Roadways and Sidewalks Maintenance.
The proposed amendment outlines a two-year implementation plan for new homestead exemptions. The first year will see a proposed $150,000 homestead exemption. In the second year, this exemption is set to increase to $250,000 and will be adjusted annually based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). These changes will impact the City's revenue streams and, consequently, the funding available for essential services.
The Florida Legislature placed this constitutional amendment on the November 2026 ballot. This action follows discussions on how property tax revenues support various municipal functions, from emergency services to maintaining local infrastructure.
Residents should review the proposed amendment before casting their votes in November. The outcome will shape the financial landscape for local services for years to come.
