The Port of Palm Beach Commission approved plans last Thursday, September 24, to move forward with a significant $43 million capital improvement project aimed at expanding and enhancing its cruise facilities. This initiative, identified as a priority in the Port’s 2023 Master Plan, seeks to boost cruise tourism and economic benefits for Palm Beach County and Riviera Beach.
Residents can expect to see a competitive solicitation process begin for these enhancements. The project includes constructing a new parking garage, purchasing a new passenger loading bridge, increasing screening capacity and baggage laydown areas, and adding mooring dolphins to accommodate longer ships. These improvements will directly impact the experience for cruise passengers and the operational capabilities of the Port.
Port Executive Director Michael Meekins stated the project will create opportunities for future cruise growth. Port Commission Chair Blair Ciklin emphasized the goal of bringing more cruise passengers to Palm Beach County and the City of Riviera Beach, aiming for greater economic benefits for the community. The Port currently homeports the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise, a 1680-passenger vessel that has operated from the Port since April 2022.
The Port of Palm Beach, located in Riviera Beach, has focused on enhancing the cruise passenger experience over the past few years. This expansion project continues that effort, aiming to establish the Port as an easy and convenient sailing option in South Florida. The enhancements are designed to encourage longer stays by visitors and support local businesses and restaurants.
The competitive solicitation process for the project will commence following the Commission's vote. Further details regarding timelines and specific contractors will become available as the Port moves through the procurement process.
