Oakland Park continues to push forward with significant redevelopment projects across the city, including the near completion of City Park Phase I and ongoing designs for future phases. These initiatives, part of a broader Comprehensive Facilities Plan, aim to transform public spaces and infrastructure, with a target completion date of 2029, coinciding with the city's centennial.
The City Park project, located at 3900 NE Third Avenue, saw its groundbreaking ceremony on June 11, 2021. This $5.9 million Phase I effort includes a new splash pad, playground, basketball courts, renovated pickleball courts, and a concession stand. The nine-acre multi-use park and library complex also features new ADA restrooms and a covered pavilion as part of its initial phase.
Designs are currently underway for Phase II of City Park. This next stage will introduce a new City library and community center, an urban forest, a butterfly garden, an exercise area, and a jogging trail. These additions promise to expand recreational and educational opportunities for residents, enhancing the overall quality of life in Oakland Park.
Beyond City Park, the Comprehensive Facilities Plan encompasses new municipal buildings. On July 22, 2020, city staff unveiled designs for four new buildings, including a Public Works Facility and two Fire Stations (9 and 87), which then moved into the pre-construction phase. The design for the N. Andrews Gardens Community Center is advancing to Phase II, and the City Commission approved the first reading of an ordinance to re-zone the CubeSmart property for the new Fire Station 20.
These extensive projects receive funding from Oakland Park's $40 million General Obligation Bond, which 67 percent of voters approved on November 6, 2018. City Manager David Hebert spearheads the redevelopment plan, which forms the cornerstone of the city's 10-year vision. The city anticipates the completion of the entire redevelopment plan by 2029, aligning with Oakland Park's 100th anniversary.
