Home Fire Escape Plans: Seconds Count for Local Families

Families have minutes to evacuate during a fire. A home fire escape plan ensures residents know where to go and what to do.

National statistics show 71% of American households have a fire escape plan, but only 47% practice it. Many households underestimate how quickly a fire becomes unmanageable.

Install interconnected smoke alarms on every level, inside each sleeping room, and outside separate sleeping areas. Closing doors slows the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.

Practice escape plans regularly. Drills teach family members, including children, escape routes and a designated outdoor meeting place. This reduces panic and speeds evacuation.

Develop a plan with two ways out of every room, ensuring windows are unobstructed. Designate a safe outdoor meeting spot. Practice the plan at least twice annually.
