The building at 106 N Pine Avenue, a cornerstone of Inverness commerce and community for over a century, continues to stand as a testament to the city's enduring history. Constructed in 1912 with distinctive red clay brick and 12-inch thick walls, the structure originally relied on wood-burning fireplaces for heat, marking its early days in the burgeoning Florida town.
Its first tenant was the George Dickenson Grocery Store, opened by brothers Frank and George Dickenson. This initial venture set the stage for a long line of businesses and public services. From 1915 to 1937, the building served as the Inverness Post Office, with Mary 'Mollie' Pridgen and later Joseph P. Savary overseeing postal operations for the community.
Over the decades, the property adapted to the changing needs of Inverness. In 1939, Richburg Grocery Store occupied the first floor, while owners George Marion and Edna Richburg resided on the second. The building also briefly housed the Conrad-Morris Funeral Home from 1942 to 1945, during which time its owner, Coy Conrad, served as Mayor of Inverness from 1941 to 1943. Later, it became a hub for building materials, with Carl Ogden and Carey Smoak selling concrete products, and Smoak & White operating a general building contracting business there from 1968 to 1997.
In 1997, Inverness natives Tim and John Channel purchased the building, opening 'Accents by Grace.' This business operated from the Pine Avenue location until 2006, when it relocated to a Main Street storefront. The 'Ice Cream Doctor' then opened in January 2007, continuing the building's legacy of local enterprise. The building marked its 100th birthday at the time of a plaque dedication, an event that also celebrated the ice cream store's five-year anniversary at the historic address.
