In accordance with the requirements of our National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit for our wastewater treatment plant, Muhlenberg Township is providing public notification of a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) that occurred as follows: Date and Time of Overflow: June 7, 2024 at approximately 1:00 PM Location of Overflow: The sanitary sewer overflow occurred at the following location: Overflow Point: 4244 5th Street Highway, Reading PA 19605 Receiving Stream: Schuylkill River Cause of Overflow: The SSO was caused by: Heavy Rainfall Estimated Volume of Overflow: 7,500 gallons Corrective Actions Taken: Muhlenberg Township Authority personnel responded to the SSO and took the following corrective actions: The SSO was stopped within 2 hours. The area was flushed with clean water and disinfected. Health Precautions: • Avoid contact with the affected water. • Wash your hands thoroughly if you come into contact with the affected water. • Do not consume water from the affected area without boiling it first.
