The Things You Keep Calling “Fine” Are Probably Not Fine

Three questions from men who are tired of pretending the problem is somewhere else. No dramatic reinvention required—just a little honesty and one less excuse.

Question: I’m 41, married, and apparently I snore like a chainsaw falling down a staircase. My wife has started sleeping in the guest room, which is humiliating, and I keep saying I’ll deal with it after I lose 20 pounds. I’m tired during the day but I work a lot, so maybe that’s all it is. Is this actually a health thing or just an annoying marriage thing?

It can be both. Loud, regular snoring—especially with gasping, choking, morning headaches, or falling asleep during the day—can point to sleep apnea. That’s not a character flaw or a weight-loss prerequisite. It’s a medical issue worth evaluating, and untreated sleep apnea is associated with high blood pressure, impaired concentration, mood problems, and cardiovascular risk. Also, your wife is not being dramatic for wanting to sleep. Nobody becomes more loving after being punched in the eardrum by a human lawn mower.

Make an appointment with your primary-care clinician and ask specifically about sleep apnea. A home sleep test may be appropriate. Do not wait until you become a different person at a lower body weight. Get the problem measured first.

Question: I keep joining gyms, buying protein powder, going hard for two weeks, then disappearing. I’m not lazy exactly—I have two kids, a job, and a lower back that has begun sending formal complaints—but I also know I’m using “busy” as a shield. What’s the non-Instagram version of getting fit?

Yeah, some of that is on you. But the answer is not punishing yourself with a six-day program designed for a single man with no laundry. Start with the minimum you can repeat: two 30-minute strength sessions a week, plus walking on most days. Squat or sit-to-stand, hinge, push, pull, carry. Keep the weights modest and your ego on a short leash. Research consistently shows that regular moderate activity improves health even when it doesn’t produce a movie-trailer physique.

Your goal for the first month is not transformation. It’s becoming the guy who keeps appointments with himself.

Question: My girlfriend says I “shut down” whenever we argue. I don’t yell. I don’t insult her. I just go quiet and start cleaning things aggressively, which apparently is not the same as communicating. I need time to think, but she says I’m punishing her. Who’s right?

Both of you, partly. Taking a pause is healthy. Vanishing into silence with no return time feels like abandonment, even if you’re quietly alphabetizing the spice rack. Say, “I’m too flooded to do this well. I need 30 minutes, and I will come back at 8:00.” Then actually come back. If you need more time, update her instead of disappearing into the attic of your own brain.

Your actionable step: today, schedule the medical appointment, the two workouts, or the 30-minute conversation pause—whichever excuse you’ve been rehearsing longest.
