Seek Shelter: Landspout Possible Near Hastings, St. Johns County

A Special Weather Statement has been issued for St. Johns and Flagler counties due to a strong thunderstorm near Hastings capable of producing a landspout and wind gusts up to 50 mph, effective until 4:30 PM EDT today.

Residents in St. Johns and Flagler counties are advised to seek shelter indoors immediately due to a Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Jacksonville FL.

A strong thunderstorm capable of producing a landspout was detected by Doppler radar at 4:00 PM EDT today, October 10, near Hastings. The storm is moving north at 15 mph. Hazards include landspouts and wind gusts up to 50 mph. Minor damage to outdoor objects, falling tree limbs, and blowing unsecured objects are possible. The NWS advises that if outdoors, individuals should seek shelter inside a building. This alert is effective until 4:30 PM EDT.

Locations impacted include Saint Augustine, Saint Augustine Beach, Crescent Beach, Saint Augustine Shores, Butler Beach, Vilano Beach, Saint Augustine South, Spuds, Anastasia, and Dupont Center.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring, which may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also a hazard; lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
