Dangerous Rip Currents, High Surf, and Minor Flooding Expected for Coastal Areas
Coastal Nassau, Duval, Flagler, and St. Johns counties face dangerous rip currents, high surf, and minor coastal flooding from October 6 until October 8, according to the NWS.
Coastal residents and visitors in Nassau, Duval, Flagler, and St. Johns counties are advised to take immediate precautions as a Rip Current Statement, High Surf Advisory, and Coastal Flood Advisory are now in effect. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jacksonville FL has issued these alerts, effective from October 6 at 2:57 AM EDT until October 8 at 5:00 AM EDT.
A High Rip Current Risk is in effect from noon today, October 6, through late Wednesday night, October 7. Dangerous rip currents are expected. The NWS advises inexperienced swimmers to remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions. If caught in a rip current, relax and float; do not swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Swim near a lifeguard.
A High Surf Advisory is also active from 5 PM this afternoon, October 6, to 5 AM EDT Thursday, October 8, with large breaking waves of 6 to 8 feet anticipated. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect from noon today, October 6, to 5 AM EDT Thursday, October 8, with minor coastal flooding expected. Impacts include flooding of lots, parks, and roads, with isolated road closures possible. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Residents in flood-prone areas should take necessary actions to protect property.
