Position: Firefighter/Engineer - Pensacola Fire Department - Station 7 ARFF Department: Fire Department Salary Range: $47,918.40 - $77,397.12 Annually NATURE OF WORK: This is specialized work in fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical services. An employee in this class performs hazardous tasks under emergency conditions and frequently exposes the individual to stressful and dangerous situations. Work includes operating fire apparatus, preventing and extinguishing fires, and providing basic life support. Employees perform tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures but are required to exercise sound judgment and initiative in emergency situations. May be required to perform related duties as required. ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK: * Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls. Lays and connects hose; holds nozzle and directs water stream; raises and climbs ladders; uses chemical fire extinguishers, bars, axes, handlines and other equipment. * Performs rescue operations including entry, forcible entry, ventilation, and search; removes persons from danger. * Performs salvage operations such as covering furniture and removing water. * Administers first aid and CPR to injured persons. * Participates in fire drills and attends training classes to maintain and increase knowledge of firefighting and related activities. * Operates and maintains fire apparatus and equipment. * Inspects and cleans fire apparatus and equipment; performs routine maintenance tasks. * Inspects buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances. * Participates in public education programs. * Prepares reports and maintains records. * Performs fire hydrant maintenance. * Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS OF WORK: * Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. * Must be at least 18 years of age. * Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license throughout employment. * Must be a non-user of tobacco products for at least one year prior to application and shall continue to be a non-user of tobacco products during employment with the City of Pensacola. * Must be certified as a Firefighter by the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training. * Must be certified as an Emergency Medical Technician by the State of Florida. * Must be able to pass a physical examination, drug screen and background investigation. * Knowledge of firefighting principles, practices, and techniques. * Knowledge of first aid and CPR. * Ability to operate fire apparatus and equipment. * Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. * Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public. * Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. * Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: * Must reside within a 45-minute response time of Pensacola International Airport within six months of employment. * Must be able to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays. * Must be available for emergency callback. * Must possess Airport Fire Fighter certification within 12 months of employment. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: * Previous firefighting experience. * Previous experience as an Emergency Medical Technician. * Knowledge of airport firefighting procedures. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: * Must be able to pass a physical examination, drug screen and background investigation. * Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects. * Ability to climb ladders and work at heights. * Ability to work in confined spaces. * Ability to work in extreme weather conditions. * Ability to wear and use self-contained breathing apparatus.
