MODS Celebrates Asian-Pacific American Heritage

May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, and the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) will celebrate the rich culture, traditions, history and music in collaboration with Polynesian Proud Productions at its 12th Annual Asian-Pacific American Heritage Celebration on May 6. “Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have enriched communities and the nation with enduring leadership, vibrant cultures and extensive contributions to all aspects of our society,” said Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of MODS. “While showing steadfast resilience in the face of great hardship, they have helped shape our country’s history for the better, including protecting the nation during times of war, serving the American people at all levels of government, and spearheading innovations. We are committed to celebrating the rich heritage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and furthering our collective efforts to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in everything we do.” Guests are invited to enjoy a full-day of cultural performances from Polynesian Proud Productions, drumming with Ronin Taiko and demonstrations by Joe Keit Martial Arts, as well as learning about different art forms from various Asian-Pacific American cultures, exploring the science of volcanoes and islands, participating in a shark tooth dig and engaging in hands-on make-and-take arts and crafts stations that celebrate the diversity of South Florida’s AsianPacific Islander community. “In creating this event 12 years ago in partnership with MODS, it has always been an opportunity to share, showcase and celebrate our Polynesian culture so everyone can experience the beauty, excitement and rich culture, traditions and customs of our islands and our people,” said Russell “Talani” Gagliano with Polynesian Proud Productions. “To perpetuate, preserve and promote through performances, demonstrations and hands-on interaction with our community, families and attendees as we immerse guests in the islands of Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand, Kingdom of Tonga and Samoa. The event is educational and fun at the same time.” Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have contributed significantly to many facets of American culture and society, including science and medicine, literature and art, sports and recreation, government and politics, and activism and law. In 2021, Kamala Harris became the first Asian American Vice President of the United States. Today, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are the fastest-growing racial group in the United States. The month of May was chosen for AAPI Heritage Month because it commemorates the immigration of the first Japanese people to the United States on May 7, 1843. May also is a significant month because it recognizes Golden Spike Day, May 10, 1869, which marks the completion of the transcontinental railroad that was built with significant contributions from Chinese workers. This event is included with admission to the Museum. Tickets can be purchased online at mods.org/tickets or by visiting the Museum box office upon arrival.

Dinosaur Exhibit Stomps into MODS

Ribbon Cutting Friday, May 19, at 10:30 a.m. The Mesozoic Era will soon come to life at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Expedition: Dinosaur, presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, will stomp into the Museum on Friday, May 19. The traveling exhibit will run from Friday, May 19, through Monday, September 4. An official ribbon cutting is scheduled for Friday, May 19, at 10:30 a.m., with Joseph P. Cox, president & CEO of MODS and Caitlin Stella, CEO of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, expected to be in attendance. Expedition: Dinosaur combines life-size, lifelike animatronic dinosaurs, featuring realistic movements and sound. Engaging and educational interactive experiences explain dinosaur movement, digestion, and evolution, and showcase the life and methods of dinosaur fossil hunters from the 1800s to today. In addition to large animatronic dinosaurs, interactive highlights include a digital sandbox, paleontologist camp, and an interactive robot that allows visitors to manipulate dinosaur eggs! The animatronic dinosaurs on display include Albertosaurus, Young Amargasaurus, Carnotaurus, Dilophosaurus, Iguanodon, Pachycephalosaurus, Velociraptor, Stegasaurus and Triceratops. Interactive activities will include Pangea Puzzle, 5-Finger Robot Egg Incubator, Dinosaur Egg Scanner, Interactive Fossil Viewing Boxes, Dinosaur Dig, Dino Operation Game and more. “Our vision at MODS is to inspire visitors through innovative, experiential discovery,” said Cox. “Fascination with prehistoric life never goes extinct, and Expedition: Dinosaur provides the opportunity to explore and connect with these fossilized creatures from the past through today’s technology and modern Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) applications.” “At Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, we believe that the ‘power of play’ is a healing force. We are committed to creating a warm and welcoming healing environment for children and families in our care. We are excited to continue to partner with MODS and utilize play to engage, educate and support the growth and development of children of all ages in our community. We share in that mission,” said Stella. The exhibit is included with Museum admission and will be open to the public daily through Monday, September 4. Muslim Community Volunteers for Day of Service

" More than 60 volunteers from Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA fanned out across Richmond, Virginia, on Thursday, July 3, for a day of service known as Jalsa Cares. Held ahead of the group’s 75th annual Jalsa Salana USA convention over the Fourth of July weekend, the effort brought members young and old together to clean parks, restore a historic cemetery, distribute 250 meals to those in need, and hold a session on fire safety awareness. Volunteers traveled in from as many as 10 states to take part. Jalsa Cares is the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s way of giving back to the cities that so generously host its annual convention — a public act of gratitude and service rooted in Islamic teachings. As volunteer Harris Zafar put it, “Service to humanity is worship.” At East End Cemetery — a historic burial ground for Black Richmonders dating back to 1897 — volunteers joined the Friends of East End to uncover more than 20 overgrown headstones. “This whole area was basically a thick forest,” said Amjad Mahmood Khan, national secretary of public affairs. “As Muslims who love and live in the United States, we want to give back to our community and show our gratitude by serving the most underserved areas.” “It makes it unique because it’s people who have been forgotten,” said Kaleem Wali, president of the St. Louis chapter, who helped lead the cemetery cleanup. “Being that we are Ahmadis, we have ‘Love for all, hatred for none.’ And so for Ahmadis to come out and take care of a cemetery that has been neglected — it means a lot.”  The Red Cross, a longtime community partner, welcomed the group’s return. “We appreciate your dedication and your willingness to give to the community,” said Christy Carneal of the Red Cross Virginia region at the Jalsa Cares kickoff event near the James River. She presented a Community Partner Award to the local Muslim youth chapter in recognition of their commitment to service.City officials and civic leaders also praised the initiative. “We come together across all different divides to serve one another,” said Lawson Wijesooriya, chief of staff to Richmond Mayor Danny Avula. “That is one of the best ways to heal.” Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as), the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, taught: “Never, ever restrict your circle of kindness.” From cemetery restoration to neighborhood cleanups, Jalsa Cares 2025 embodied that call — showing Richmond what Islam looks like in action: grateful, generous and grounded in service.
