Fernandina Beach residents can help combat invasive plant species threatening the city's ecosystems. These foreign plants aggressively displace native vegetation, disrupt local environments, and impact island dunes and conservation lands.

Invasive plants outcompete native species for space, reduce biodiversity, and can affect human health and the economy. The city targets six destructive species: Mother of Millions, Asparagus Fern, Brazilian Pepper, Tuberous Sword Fern, Chinaberry Tree, and Chinese Tallow.

The city is removing these plants from conservation lands and urges private property owners to do the same. "Preserving Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island's natural environment requires a community-wide effort," a city representative said. "Providing citizens with knowledge and resources is key to tackling this problem on private properties, where much of the spread perpetuates."

The city offers a free tree replacement program for residents who remove an invasive tree. Contact City Arborist David Neville at 904-310-3480 for information on tree and potential non-tree invasive plant replacements.

The initiative aims to protect the island's natural heritage by educating residents on identifying, avoiding, and removing invasive plants. Resources are available to help citizens learn about these threats and find removal assistance.
