NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – The Senior Resource Center provides healthy, prepared food to more than 650 older adults every weekday in New Hanover County through the Home Delivered Meals Program. The program, which serves homebound individuals aged 60 and older who are facing food insecurity and isolation, delivers meals to address nutritional needs, while offering interaction with a friendly face. To continue meeting the need, the Senior Resource Center is looking for volunteer drivers to deliver meals Monday through Friday to program participants. “Our amazing drivers are crucial to the health and well-being of older adults in the county,” said Paige Lundberg, Nutrition Services Program Manager. “In delivering this daily meal, they also provide a homebound older adult a warm interaction, and, most importantly, a safety check. This is truly a rewarding opportunity if someone is looking to give back to the community.” Volunteers can arrange to work on days that are convenient for their schedule. Along with regular route drivers, the program is seeking substitutes who are available to fill in for regular drivers. Routes vary in distance and the number of stops, but each route takes approximately 2 hours to complete. Drivers are provided with a GPS-enabled smartphone to map the routes with directions and sequencing. Drivers pick up the meals in delivery bags at the Senior Resource Center (2222 S. College Road, Wilmington) between 9:30-10:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. An orientation for potential new drivers is provided once a month at the Senior Resource Center and shadowing opportunities are available.
