Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Fayette, Prepare for Severe Winds & Flooding
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Fayette County until October 10, with hazardous winds and significant flooding expected; residents should prepare immediately for property damage and potential evacuations.
FAYETTE – A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Fayette County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 9:56 PM CDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL. This warning is in effect until October 10 at 6:00 AM UTC.
Residents should plan for hazardous winds reaching 10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Potential impacts include damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect many large tree limbs to break, some trees to snap or uproot, and scattered power and communications outages. All remaining efforts to protect property should be completed as soon as possible. Move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. NWS forecasts an additional 2-4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, leading to potential moderate flooding. Emergency plans should include the possibility of evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may quickly swell, and small streams, creeks, and ditches could overflow. Floodwaters may enter structures and cause hazardous driving conditions with potential road and bridge closures. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.
Tornadoes are not expected at this time, though showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. Stay informed of the latest forecast changes. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
