Elmwood Park Squad Car Hit Head-On on Chicago's West Side
Elmwood Park police responded to a serious traffic collision involving one of their marked squad cars on Chicago's West Side overnight, according to reports from CBS Chicago. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered a gray sedan and the marked Elmwood Park police squad car had collided head-on, the severity of the impact prompting a full investigation into what led to the crash.
The incident adds to a troubling pattern of squad car collisions across the Chicago area in recent months. In April, a 42-year-old driver in a gray SUV failed to yield and struck a Chicago Police Department squad car traveling with lights and sirens activated in the Garfield Park neighborhood, injuring five people including two CPD officers. That crash, which occurred around 12:01 a.m. on April 12 in the 3800 block of West Washington Avenue, also damaged three parked vehicles, and the SUV driver was taken into custody with charges pending.
In March, an Elmwood Park sports bar burglary alarm escalated into a police chase and crash on Harlem Avenue, resulting in one suspect hospitalized and another arrested. The recurring nature of these collisions underscores safety concerns for both officers and civilians during emergency responses across the region.
Elmwood Park Police Department has opened a formal investigation into the head-on crash, though specific details about injuries, citations, or charges remain pending as detectives work through evidence and witness statements. The department has not yet released the identity of the 31-year-old sedan driver or provided additional information about the sequence of events leading to the collision.
