NTSB: Engine Blade Failure Led to Ryanair Window Damage

Washington D.C. — A fan blade in the right engine of a Boeing 737-800 broke loose, sending fragments that shattered a passenger window and damaged the aircraft's fuselage, according to a preliminary report released by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The NTSB's investigation indicates that the detached fan blade initiated a series of events impacting the aircraft's integrity. Fragments from the engine struck the fuselage in several locations, in addition to breaking the window.

The preliminary findings outline the sequence of mechanical failure. A single fan blade within the engine fractured, subsequently ejecting pieces outward. These pieces then made contact with the airframe, causing the noted damage.
