Mayors Gain Authority Over Local Planning Decisions

LONDON – Mayors in England will now possess the authority to override local council planning decisions, according to an announcement from the government. This policy shift grants mayors direct power over development proposals within their jurisdictions.

Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook described this alteration as "essential" for assisting mayors. He indicated the change would help them "effectively deliver new homes."

Previously, local councils held final decision-making power on planning applications. This new mandate introduces a mechanism for mayoral intervention in such processes.
