Juneau's First 2026 Cruise Ship Ushers in Passenger Caps[1]
Juneau's 2026 cruise season kicked off Monday, April 27, when the Holland America Line's MS Eurodam arrived at 12:30 p.m., carrying thousands of passengers into the Southeast Alaska port. This marks the debut of enforced daily limits negotiated with cruise lines: 16,000 passengers on weekdays and 12,000 on Saturdays, down from peak days that once topped 21,000 visitors. City Visitor Industry Director Alix Pierce told KTOO the caps promote an even distribution across up to five ships daily, fostering stability for businesses and residents in the capital city of about 30,000.
The restrictions, building on a 2024 limit of five ships per day, respond to years of resident complaints over overcrowding that strained downtown streets, restaurants and trails like those to Mendenhall Glacier. Officials project 1.69 million passengers through October 6, similar to prior years but without the chaotic spikes. Six more ships were due this week, doubling next week, with the first five-ship day on May 5.
While total visitors hold steady at around 1.7 million, scheduling tweaks ensure compliance, easing crowds for independent explorers and diners. The Juneau Assembly's Visitor Industry Task Force seeks public input at June meetings or via [email protected] to shape future growth. Local leaders view the caps as a step toward balancing tourism's economic engine with community livability.
