Oahu MPO Adopts 2050 Transportation Plan
The Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization Policy Board adopted the Oʻahu Regional Transportation Plan 2050 on March 30, 2026, establishing a federally required framework to guide transportation investments on Oahu through mid-century.
The plan prioritizes safety, system reliability, multimodal accessibility, and climate resilience. It balances performance goals against available federal, state, and local funding to ensure projects remain implementable. The network encompasses roadways, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian facilities.
Mark Garrity, executive director of the Oahu MPO, said the adoption reflects coordination to advance a multimodal system emphasizing safety and active transportation, aligned with the Navahine Settlement and Vision Zero commitments.
Councilmember Val Aquino Okimoto, chair of the Policy Board, said the plan provides a framework for transportation investments supporting safety and long-term infrastructure needs. House Representative Darius K. Kila, vice chair, added that it improves transportation access for Leeward Coast communities.
The Oahu MPO serves as the designated metropolitan planning organization for the island, conducting ongoing, cooperative transportation planning.
