Water & Sewer Budget Review and Vote

Water & Sewer Budget Review and Vote

About this Event

May 13, 2026 Dear Water & Sewer Users, I am writing to inform you that the Fairfax Water & Sewer Commissioners will be meeting on Monday, May 18, 2026, at 6:00 PM at the Town Office to review and vote on the proposed FY27 Water & Sewer Budget, which includes a proposed rate increase for water and sewer users. Over the past several months, the Water & Sewer Commissioners have been discussing the financial condition of the utility system, current operational costs, ongoing compliance requirements, and future infrastructure needs. As part of this process, the Commissioners will vote on two potential rate increase options: Option One: Implementing a rate increase at one time in order to immediately stabilize system finances and address operational needs; or Option Two: Phasing in the rate increase over a longer period of time. While this option lessens the immediate impact on users, it would likely require borrowing funds to offset short-term costs, resulting in additional long-term expenses associated with financing and interest. The Commissioners will review and discuss both approaches in detail before making a final decision regarding the FY27 Water & Sewer Budget and proposed rate structure. Transparency, accountability, and open communication throughout this process remain important priorities for both the Town and the Water & Sewer Commissioners. I understand that any increase in utility rates is difficult and impacts households and businesses differently. I also want to acknowledge that while these discussions have been ongoing for several months, I have personally spoken with several of our water and sewer rate payers, and many understand why these increases are necessary. There is a shared recognition that the system requires long-term financial stability, ongoing maintenance, regulatory compliance, and investment to ensure reliable service now and into the future. Thank you for your continued patience, understanding, and support as we work through these challenges and continue strengthening the system. Sincerely, Mike BishopTown Manager
