Summit County Library’s Summer Reading Program Kicks Off June 6
Free program includes reading challenges, weekly programs, and prizes for all ages
SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. — Summit County Library’s free summer reading program, themed “Unearth a Story,” officially begins Monday, June 8, with a kick-off celebration on Saturday, June 6. This all-ages seasonal celebration of the stories we love runs through Saturday, August 8.
Summit County’s summer reading program aims to encourage reading as a year-round habit, combining special events, challenges and prizes to help students keep their reading skills sharp and entice parents and trusted adults to participate in this inclusive effort.
"We are so excited about this year's summer reading theme, Unearth a Story,” said Summit County Library Director Sarah Wilkinson. “Dinosaurs are always popular with kids, and this summer we're going all in!”
“I love that this theme truly has something for everyone,” she said. “Whether you're six or sixty, we all love a good story and have a little curiosity about the past. Come dig in with us this summer."
Readers of all ages can stay informed by signing up for the Summer Reading Newsletter.
Registering for the Reading Challenge
Registration for the Reading Challenge is now open. Participants can read or complete an activity to earn a badge. All participants will receive a buy-one-get-one code for tickets to select Colorado Rapids games after registering.
For younger children, being read to or listening to an audiobook counts towards completion of a badge, which can be logged in the Beanstack app or via a paper reading log. Teens and adults can also write reviews, complete fun activities, or attend programs in addition to logging their reading. For every badge completed during the Summer Reading Program, participants will earn entries to a grand prize drawing. Folks who complete all their badges also earn a prize: a free sweet treat, pizza, or book, depending on the age group.
The final grand prize drawing will be held Monday, August 10, and features tickets to The Eclipse Theater and Theatre Silco, Art Spot passes, Frisco Adventure Park tubing and cross-county skiing, Copper Mountain Summer Day passes, Breckenridge Golf Club rounds and much more.
New Community Reading Challenge
New this summer, Summit County Library launched a community reading challenge with a goal of 10,000 books read across the summer season. Progress will be tracked at each library location through a dinosaur display that grows for every 100 books read. If the community reaches its goal, every participant will be celebrated with a special surprise at the End of Summer Celebration on Saturday, August 8.
Attend Summer Reading Programs and Events
Library staff have planned programs and events for all ages – from baby story times and K-5 STEAM programming to teen Rube Goldberg challenges and adult plant swaps and book clubs. All library events are free.
